• Engineering Department's Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I contact the Department?
(A) We are located at City Hall, 150 Avon Belden Road (Northwest corner of Avon Belden Road and Electric Boulevard) in Avon Lake. Our office is on the first floor, immediately left after entering the main, front door. We are open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am until 4:30 pm. Our phone number is 930-4101. Our FAX number is 930-4105. The City Engineer’s e-mail address is wmertz@avonlake.org.

2. How do I determine if my house is in a floodplain?
(A) Call us at 930-4101 and ask to speak to Joe Reitz. We have floodplain maps that will probably answer your question.

3. How do I get my house removed from the floodplain?
(A) Again, call Joe Reitz. It may not be possible to remove your house from the floodplain. There is a lot of effort involved in the application process to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). We can help you through the application process.

4. How do I determine where the service laterals (water, sanitary, storm water), if any, are in front of my house?
(A) Usually, especially with houses less than 20 years old, we have the information in our office. Call or visit and anyone here probably can help you. If we can’t help, the Utilities Department may be able to.

5. Who owns the property behind me?
(A) It’s best to ask the person living there, if the property is occupied. Otherwise call our office. Anyone here can answer the question.

6. When will the project by my house be finished?
(A) If it is a City project, we can answer the question. Your Council person and the Mayor are very up-to-date on our projects. You may call them. Sometimes the Utilities Department has a project and they all will have to give you the answer.

7. How can I get the City to fix the street or curb in front of my house?
(A) First contact the Service Department at 930-4126. If it is more of a project than they want to handle, they (or you) may call us. We usually include these repairs in the next year’s Street Program.

8. How do I get the ditch in front of my house piped-in?
(A) Write a letter to the City Engineer or call. We will visit your address and determine if the piping-in is feasible. If it is feasible, we will then advise you that you may do the work yourself, but it must comply with the City's standard plan, which we will provide you. You also must obtain a right-of-way permit, which is available at no cost at our office. A copy of your home owner=s insurance policy is required for the right-of-way permit. If you wish the Service Department to do the work associated with the project, the City will provide the labor and you will be required to pay for the materials. However, the Service Department will schedule the work at its convenience.
