The Avon Lake Fire Department is located at 32855 Walker Road along with the police department and municipal court. The fire department has been in this location since 1978 when we moved into the present fire department structure from our old location at the corner of Lake Rd. and Route 83. When the new police department and court structures were built the existing fire department was attached to the new building. The fire department building consists of five garage “bays” which house the two fire pumpers, one aerial ladder truck, one heavy rescue truck, two advanced life support ambulances and several cars and light trucks. In the remainder of the building are located the communication center, offices, classrooms and storage rooms. Due to the fact that platoon personnel work 24-hour shifts there are also dormitory rooms a kitchen, lounge and shower facilities. Your fire department is staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days a week by State Of Ohio Licensed Professional Firefighter/ Emergency Medical Technicians who are also trained in hazardous materials, confined space and technical rescue as well as water rescue and many other specific emergency and non-emergency response techniques. The department also has an Inspection/Public Education Bureau staffed by a Lieutenant and two part time personnel who are state certified Fire Safety Inspectors as well as a Training Bureau, which consists of a Lieutenant/Training Officer. These offices along with the Secretary-Dispatch position are staffed Monday thru Friday during daytime hours. All of this is under the supervision of the Fire Chief.
Platoon personnel begin work at 7am and are relieved by another platoon at 7am the next morning, during that time period we are not only responsible for prompt and professional response to all types of emergency and non-emergency “runs” which in 2003 totaled 1,648 but also attend regularly scheduled training sessions, conduct vehicle, equipment, fire hydrant, building and grounds maintenance as well as assist in the many department special programs serving the general public.
