Rain Barrel Workshops
RAIN BARRELS: OLD IS NEW AGAIN
Capturing rainwater in a container for reuse for drinking or watering plants is not a unique concept now or in mankind's past. The current "in" term is called rainwater harvesting. No matter what term you call it, rain barrels are making a comeback in a big way.
Home improvement centers and garden centers are selling barrels and collection systems more and more, but they can be expensive. The City of Avon Lake has a rain barrel program where (1) people can either attend a workshop and assemble the barrels to take home, or (2) the City can provide people with a kit that includes instructions and all the parts needed to assemble the barrel at home with simple power tools.
Rain barrel assembly workshops can cost between $30 to $40 per barrel depending upon the group size. Rain barrel kits, including the barrel and all the parts, costs $20. Instructions are free.
If you are interested in hosting a Rain Barrel Workshop in 2011, or simply want more information, please call the Avon Lake Engineering Department at 440.930.4101. Spring will be here before you know it, so book early.
