Service Department FAQs

Can I get free mulch from the City?

compost heap_largerThe Avon Lake Service Department has available for any Lorain county resident composted leaf humus and rough wood chips. The humus and chips are available at the Service Department at 750 Avon Belden Rd (Rt 83).

The bins containing the humus are located off the north drive entrance to the building.

Residents will need to provide their own containers and shovel (no mechanical means of loading is allowed). The City does not deliver. The humus and chips are available at any time.

When is trash picked up in Avon Lake?

Allied Waste Services collects trash on Mondays, except for major holidays, when trash collection will be on the Tuesday following the Monday holiday.

Major holidays are New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.

How/where can I dispose of house paint, motor oil, tires, or other household hazardous waste that Allied Waste will not take?

The Lorain County Commissioners have opened a year-round facility for collection of many items not picked up by Allied Waste/Republic such as car tires, weed killers, empty propane tanks, etc. The facility is located at: 540 South Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44035. The hours are Monday and Wednesday from 12 pm to 6 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm. LCSWMD can be contacted at 1.800.449.5463, or online at www.loraincounty.us/solidwaste, for further information or a complete list of accepted materials.

Who will pick up furniture, appliances, grass clippings, etc.?

Allied Waste is under contract with the City (residents pay a monthly fee) to pick up bagged leaves and grass clippings in paper refuse bags; bundled branches; blue bag recyclables; bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, stoves, clothes dryers, refrigerators after freon is removed by a certified technician; carpeting and limited amounts of residential construction debris after it meets Allied Waste's required length and bundling, can be placed at curbside for pick up on the same day as the regularly scheduled garbage pick up.

Allied Waste can be contacted at 1-800-433-1309 if you have any questions about an item to be placed out for pick up.

If your bulky item is good used furniture, houseware or appliance, Lorain County Furniture Bank will accept single items up to housefuls. They offer pick up. LCFB will accept beds, dressers, sofas, chairs, tables, lamps, appliances, pots and pans. Call 440-240-0089 for more information or to schedule a pick up.

How do I dispose of a refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier or window air conditioning unit?

Allied Waste will take these items on the regular scheduled garbage pick up day. However, Freon must be removed by a certified technician. A sticker will be placed in the item showing the removal date and who performed the removal. ALLIED WASTE WILL NOT TAKE ANY ITEM THAT MAY CONTAIN FREON WITHOUT THIS STICKER. If applicable the doors must be removed when placed at curb.

The City of Avon Lake does not maintain a list of certified technicians and does not recommend any specific company. Any local heating and air conditioning service or small appliance repair service should be able to provide residents with this service.

When will branches/brush be picked up? Do I need to call the City to schedule a pick up?

Curbside branch chipping is provided by the City year round except during fall leaf collection. The City also provides Christmas tree pick up starting after Christmas to the end of January.

It is not necessary to call for pick up, the City crews follow a route through the city. There is no specific day for pick up. The branches/brush should be placed loose on the treelawn area being careful not to block the sidewalk or protrude into the street.

Allied Waste will pick up branches that are cut to 4 feet or less in length and are tied in bundles of 40 lbs or less. The bundles should be placed at curbside on the regularly scheduled garbage pick up day, between April 15 and Novermber 30.

When is curbside leaf collection?

leaves2Curbside leaf collection is provided by the City in the fall only. Leaf collection begins approximately at the end of October and continues through December, weather permitting.

Leaves should be placed on the treelawn area, not in the street. Leaves and branches should be separated as they are collected with different equipment and branch pick up is not a regular service during fall leaf season.

City crews follow a route through the city and there is no specific day for pick up. Depending on the amount of leaves to be collected, it can take the crews as long as two to three weeks to complete a full route.

During the spring, leaves should be put in paper refuse bags and placed at curbside on the regularly scheduled day for garbage pick up by Allied Waste Services.

I was told senior citizens can get free trash bags from the City, am I eligible?

Unfortunately, trash bags are no longer available. The City no longer receives Lorain County Recycling grant money; therefore, blue bags and coupons for paper yardwaste bags will no longer be offered.
