Mayor's Column for July 31, 2019
What a Bicentennial Year it has been! As Mayor of Avon Lake, it was a daunting task to find a way to acknowledge such a significant milestone for our city. We were fortunate to have a passionate and dedicated team of individuals to create a fitting tribute for a once in a lifetime event. Many thanks to our incredible Bicentennial Committee, which consisted of Avon Lake Digital Media Director Barb Cagley, Economic Development Director Ted Esborn, residents Tomi Patton, Parv Shalov, and Sherry Spenzer for planning events that celebrated Avon Lake’s rich history and vibrant future.
Avon Lake’s bicentennial officially kicked off July 3, 2018 with a bigger and better Independence Day celebration. Highlights of events specifically created for the Bicentennial included the Bicentennial Beer Festival, Community Choir Performance, Scavenger Hunt, Hike into History, and Vintage Baseball Game. The yearlong celebration drew to a close with the 4th of July Jubilee with a grand fireworks display, dog parade, pony rides, entertainment, stilt walkers, and fun activities for all ages.
We hope you enjoyed celebrating Avon Lake’s 200th birthday with us. Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible. We couldn’t have done it without you.
We are pleased to announce the Beer Festival will continue for years to come. The Avon Lake Athletic Boosters will be taking over the event, scheduled for Sept. 28, 2019 at Miller Rd. Park. Mark your calendars for what is sure to be a fun event!
