Mayor’s Column for May 16, 2018

Spring has finally arrived!  Daffodils, forsythia and the ubiquitous dandelion patch in your neighbor’s yard seemed to appear overnight as temperatures in the 80’s have us thinking ahead to a summer of family and fun. Come join us for a year-long celebration of Avon Lake’s bicentennial! The bicentennial officially kicks off with an even bigger and better Independence Day celebration on Tuesday, July 3 and will conclude with a Fourth of July Jubilee on July 4, 2019. In addition to partnering with a number of well-established events, the bicentennial committee has created new and exciting programs. There will be many opportunities to learn about Avon Lake’s rich history and vibrant future. Please visit www.avonlake200.org for a complete list of bicentennial activities.

Help us win the Avon vs. Avon Lake Community Challenge! Presented by the Fitness Center at UH Avon Health Center, this friendly competition enables residents to see which community is the healthiest. You do not need to be a member of the Fitness Center to participate. Registration is open until May 24 so call 440-988-6801 or go to uhhospitals.org/fitness for more information.

On May 15th, The American Legion Post 211 and the Avon Lake Police Department held a ceremony honoring fallen police officers from around the nation.  We are blessed with outstanding men and women who serve and protect us throughout the year with courage and dedication. Their sacrifices will always be remembered.

And finally, a well-deserved congratulations to Avon Lake High School for being ranked #5 in Northeast Ohio, #24 in the state, and #668 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. We are very proud of the staff and students of ALHS for this extraordinary accomplishment. They are a prime example of what makes Avon Lake a great community!
