Mayor’s Column for October 31, 2018
It’s hard to believe the holidays are right around the corner! Join us November 30-December 2 for a holiday celebration to remember. The North Coast Christmas will kick-off the weekend with Santa arriving by fire truck followed by the lighting up of Veterans Memorial Park. On December 1st & 2nd stop by the Lake House to take a photo with Santa and make a Christmas craft.
Just in time for the busy holiday season, we are pleased to announce Shop Local—Shop Avon Lake Week, which runs from Friday, November 23 thru Saturday, December 1. The goal is to get as many people as possible to visit Avon Lake shops and restaurants. In the past, this has been a one-day event on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. But working with our local retail businesses, we decided that one day was not enough time for people to visit all their favorite Avon Lake shops and restaurants. So this year it will be a nine-day celebration starting on Black Friday.
Autumn has been a busy time for Economic Development in Avon Lake!
On September 9, we had a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of a new space for Community Resource Services (CRS), an organization whose mission is to diminish the effects of poverty in Avon and Avon Lake. The new CRS space, in the same plaza as their old space, has almost double the square footage and a much more efficient layout. It has a lobby separate from the office area, a much larger pantry, and garage door access at the rear of the space. “We’re really looking forward to the holidays in our new space,” said Executive Director Susan Poole. “The fall months are always the busiest with a significant increase in donations. It’s during those months that we always wished for a bigger place, and now we have one!”
We had two ribbon cuttings in Avon Lake in early October, marking the opening of two new businesses. On October 1, we held a ribbon cutting at CCM Beauty & Spa Salon, a new business next to the BMV at 684 Avon Belden. CCM does nails and spa pedicures. On October 6, we held a ribbon cutting for Avon Lake Shoe Repair, a new business in the Drug Mart Plaza. Avon Lake Shoe Repair is a full service shoe repair shop with the ability to repair boots, sandals, and leather items such as purses. The owner is David DiMauro, who comes from a family with a long history in shoe repair—David grew up working in his grandmother’s shoe repair shop. We welcome CCM and Avon Lake Shoe Repair and we plan to work with them as they grow their businesses in Avon Lake.
Finally, we are very excited about the progress of our Comprehensive Land Use Plan revision. A steering committee of Avon Lake residents has been working with our planning partners at OHM Advisors since July on what will be a 10 month process to revise the Comprehensive Land Use Plan, which guides how land in Avon Lake will be used for the next twenty to thirty years. The planners have gathered much input from city residents, they even had a table at our Bicentennial Beer Festival in September. Avon Lake residents can still have their voices heard in the planning process by going to AvonLakeComprehensivePlan.com and taking the survey.
