Avon Lake Citizens Tree Commission Tree Sapling Give-Away

04/24/2023 – Avon Lake, Ohio – On April 28, cities and towns across the United States will be celebrating the 151th Anniversary of Arbor Day. Avon Lake’s Citizens Tree Commission will once again be distributing free tree seedlings to fifth grade students at Troy Intermediate School and St. Joseph Parish School in Avon Lake to commemorate this day.

Lubrizol Corporation has generously donated approximately 350 white pine seedlings for this event, and Petitti Garden Center in Avon has donated an Allegheny serviceberry tree for planting at St. Joseph school during a ceremony to be held on Arbor Day (April 28).

Last year, the ceremony was held at Troy Intermediate School where students helped mulch a swamp white oak tree that was donated and planted for the event. Members of the Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club and Avon Lake’s Environmental Affairs Advisory Board will help assemble and package the saplings to be distributed to students.

Arbor Day is a holiday during which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees and learn about the many benefits trees provide for us. Trees improve our air quality, reduce and filter storm runoff, and provide food and homes for pollinators and wildlife. Slower traffic and improved health have been correlated to the presence of tree lined streets as well. Trees also store large amounts of carbon which is an important mitigator of climate change. And don’t forget the products from trees that we use in our daily lives. The holiday originated in Nebraska in 1872, but is now celebrated nationally and in many other
countries.

Avon Lake is proud to have been recognized again this year by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA, and is proud to be working with the students of St. Joseph Parish School and Troy Intermediate School to commemorate Arbor Day 2023.
