City of Avon Lake launches its Shop Local—Shop Avon Lake Campaign for 2020

10/30/2020 – Sunday, November 1, will mark the official start of Avon Lake’s annual Shop Local—Shop Avon Lake campaign. This yearly effort began in Avon Lake several years ago as a recognition of the national Small Business Saturday during the weekend after Thanksgiving. But in 2018, Avon Lake stretched the event from one day to a week. And in 2020, Shop Local is less of an “event” and more of a “campaign” as it begins on November 1 and comes to a close on December 18. Full Story

Avon Lake Community Television - 2020 Philo Festival of Media Arts Awards Recipient

09/02/2020 – On August 27, 2020, the Alliance for Community Media - Central States Region announced the 2020 Philo Media Award winners. Of 200 entries that were submitted, Avon Lake Community Television (ALC-TV) won five awards and received nominations for “Best in Show,” “Excellence in Editing” and “Best Series Program.” These and other shows are available for viewing at www.AvonLake.org/Digital-Media. Resumes Being Accepted for Avon Lake Council Member for Ward III

08/25/2020 – AVON LAKE: Gary Izo was elected on November 5, 2019 as the Ward III Council representative on Avon Lake City Council for a four-year term. Due to his resignation effective September 4th, Avon Lake City Council is soliciting letters of interest and resumes from eligible residents who are interested in the appointment to the position of Council Ward III representative. The individual appointed shall serve until December 31, 2021 and if interested in continuing to serve, must be elected on November 7, 2021 to serve the remaining 2 years of the unexpired term. Free Pop-up COVID-19 Testing Event

08/18/2020 – Avon Lake will be hosting a free pop-up COVID-19 community testing event in partnership with Lorain County Public Health and the Ohio National Guard medics on Wednesday, August 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 20, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center, 32850 Electric Boulevard. Avon Lake Rolls Out Temporary Outdoor Dining Area Program for Restaurants & Bars

Avon Lake's Community Improvement Corporation teams up with Avon Lake Waterfront Corp. to provide $98,000 in grants to City's restaurants and bars

04/21/2020 – On Sunday, March 15, Avon Lake's Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) announced that their organization was committed to financially supporting Avon Lake restaurants and bars in light of Governor DeWine's order to close them. Now, just over one month later, the CIC has completed a grant program that invested $98,000 into 25 different restaurants and bars in Avon Lake. Along the way, they formed a partnership with Avon Lake Waterfront Corp. (A.L. Waterfront), the group that puts on the Avon Lake Waterfront Wine Festival. With the assistance from A.L. Waterront, every grantee got $3,000 or $4,000. Full Story

Avon Lake Grants Almost $87,000 to City Businesses Through its Job Growth Incentive Program

04/16/2020 – On Monday, April 13, Avon Lake City Council approved this year's awards for the City's Job Growth Incentive Program (JGIP). This unique program was created in 2012 and reauthorized in 2017. It is primarily a business retention program but also sometimes acts as a business incentive. Each spring, the City looks at the business income tax (withholding) for every business in Avon Lake. Every business that has a year-over-year increase in income tax receives a grant award fro the City in the amount of 25% of the increase, with a maximum award of $50,000 and a minimum award of $25. Eligible organizations are for-profit entities that have a substantial part of their operation occurring at a commercial property in Avon Lake; home-based businesses do not qualify. Full Story

The Cities and School Districts of Avon and Avon Lake team up with local hospitals for the Covid-19 Heroes Fund

04/15/2020 – On Wednesday, April 15, we will launch a campaign called the Covid-19 Heroes Fund, which has been created to support our frontline workers who work tirelessly to protect our residents. The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and MercyHealth are participating with these two communities to show their gratitude toward these hospitals and their caregivers by making donations to the Heroes Fund, which will run until May 8. 03/15/2020 – On Sunday, March 15, Avon Lake’s Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) announced through its president, Janice Lapina, that their organization is committed to supporting local Avon Lake restaurants and bars ordered to close by the State of Ohio due to Coronavirus outbreak. The CIC makes their announcement the same day as the order in hopes that restaurants and bars in Avon Lake will take some degree of hope that there is support from their community. Full Story

12/26/2019 – On Monday, December 3, at 3:00pm, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at Big M Pizza, Avon Lake's newest restaurant, located at 153 Lear Road in Avon Lake. It was just this summer that the cozy restaurant space on Lear Rd. -- nestled in the friendly, walkable neighborhood near the intersection with Electric Blvd. -- came open, as The Breakwall Food & Spirits moved and expanded its operation into the Drug Mart Plaza near Walker and Moore. Ribbon Cutting at Ibiza (Mediterranean restaurant) on Wednesday, December 4th at 12:00pm

12/03/2019 – On Wednesday, December 4th at 12:00pm, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at Ibiza, a new Mediterranean restaurant, at 33481 Lake Road in Avon Lake. Ibiza gets its name from the Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern cost of Spain. Antonio Ponce, the owner of this new Avon Lake restaurant, has been working in Spanish cuisine for nearly 25 years. He started in the Spanish and Portuguese rich communities in New Jersey, and moved to Cleveland in 1996 to help open Mallorca, the popular Spanish restaurant on W.9th Street in Cleveland's Warehouse District. From there, Ponce went to Sangria Y Tapas near Detroit and Dover Center in Westlake. So why name his own restaurant Ibiza? "Ibiza is the party island," says Ponce. "I want to bring that festive atmosphere to my restaurant." Full Story

United Auto Workers (UAW) Document Shows Plan for New Product, $900 Million Investment at Ford Ohio Assembly Plant (OHAP)

11/01/2019 – On Friday, November 1, the UAW released a document titled "UAW Ford Contract Summary: Hourly Workers." Page 7 of that document is labeled "Product and Investment," and lists eight assembly operations that are slated for new investments. Ohio Assembly Plant is one of them, and the planned new investment is $900 million. And included in the description of the investment is "New product to be added in 2023." Full Story

09/23/2019 – On Friday, September 27, at 2:00pm, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at Erie Nails at 33382 Walker Road in Avon Lake. This event comes in advance of Erie Nails’ Grand Opening, which is taking place two days later on Sunday, September 29. Erie Nails is the newest business in the plaza next to Discount Drug Mart on the northeast corner of Walker Rd. and Moore Rd., the eleventh business in the plaza. This is timed to take place just before the beginning of Big Trucks, a popular family event across the street at the Safety Center on the same day. Lakeside Nutrition is the newest business in Towne Center, which now supports ten businesses. 7th Annual North Coast Business Expo on April 25, 2019 in Avon Lake

04/02/2019 – On Thursday, April 25th, the 7th annual North Coast Business Expo will take place at Sprenger Health Care Systems' Main Street Care Center, 500 Community Drive in Avon Lake. Approximately 40 local businesses and organizations will have tables from which they can share information with attendees. These exhibitors will have a networking hour between 1pm and 2pm, and then the Expo will be open to the public from 2pm - 4pm. This is the fifth year in a row that the Expo has been hosted by Sprenger Health Care Systems, and Sprenger provides free food for all exhibitors and attendees. Those attending the Expo should park in the Towne Center shopping areas main parking lot, behind First Federal, where a shuttle will pick them up and take them to and fro the Expo. Full Story

Ribbon Cuttings at the Lofts at Beach Park Station on Friday, April 12th at 10am
