Learn More About Avon Lake

Nestled along the shores of Lake Erie, Avon Lake is located in Northern Ohio just 15 miles west of Cleveland. Our close proximity to the city gives residents convenient access to museums, professional sporting events, and world-class theater and orchestra productions. Q. What should I do with my leaves in the fall?

The Public Works Department picks up leaves curbside, beginning in the fall and ending at the end of December, weather permitting. During this time, the planned route will be posted on the City website under “News.” Leaf piles should contain only leaves and placed only on the tree lawn area, not in the street or sidewalks. Kimble Companies provide yard waste pickup during your regularly scheduled trash pickup day, March through December. Yard waste can be placed in bins provided by Kimble Companies, paper bags, or containers clearly labeled “Yard Waste.” More information: Refuse, Recycling, and Yard Waste

Q. What happens to the leaves that are picked up by the City?

The Avon Lake Public Works Department offers free compost as a service to residents of Lorain County year-round. Compost storage bins are located behind the Service Garage at 750 Avon Belden Road. More information: Free Leaf Humus and Wood Chips

Q. How is snow removed in the City?

During a snowstorm, a five-truck route is in effect, and during a heavy storm there are two trucks per route operating (10 total). If the Police or Fire Departments need assistance in an emergency, the snow plows will be diverted to clear the way. Snow should not be shoveled or blown into the street. When 2” or more of snow is in the forecast, a snow parking ban is in effect. Residents need to also keep sidewalks and the area surrounding fire hydrants clear of snow. Q. How does trash pickup and recycling work in Avon Lake?

Recycling and refuse materials will be picked by Kimble Companies on the day indicated on the map except when a holiday falls on the regular pickup day, when recycling and refuse materials will be delayed by one day. Carts should be placed at your curb by 7:00 a.m. and no earlier than 5:00 p.m. the day before pickup. More information: Recycling Services and Trash Container Placement Information

Bulk and excess trash collection occurs one time in a calendar month on regularly scheduled collection day. If a residence needs more than the one-time bulk service in a calendar month, the items will be picked up and the residence will be charged. More information: Bulk and Excess Trash Guidelines

Q. Is there a way to prevent solicitors from knocking on my door?

Yes! Avon Lake residents can add their address to a list that notifies solicitors not to knock on their door. To be added, complete the Do Not Knock Registry Form. To obtain your optional sticker, go to Avon Lake City Hall, 150 Avon Belden Road 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or the Avon Lake Police Department. Q. How can I receive emergency alerts?
