PSA: Maintain Lawns and Yards to Stay in Compliance with City Ordinance

07/08/2025 – Avon Lake, Ohio – The City of Avon Lake would like to remind all residents and property owners of their responsibilities under local ordinances related to yard maintenance and property upkeep.

As summer continues, grass and vegetation can continue to grow rapidly. In accordance with Avon Lake Codified Ordinance § 668.02, grass and weeds that exceed eight inches in height are considered a public nuisance. Property owners must ensure that lawns are mowed regularly to remain in compliance. Failure to maintain grass at or below this height may result in a notice of violation and, if uncorrected, the City may take corrective action with associated fines and penalties assessed to the property owner.

Additionally, under Codified Ordinance § 668.04 (d), accumulations of junk, debris, or discarded items in yards, — including but not limited to any garbage, waste which shall include yard waste, peelings of vegetables or fruits, rubbish, ashes, cans, bottles, wire, paper, cartons, boxes, parts of automobiles, wagons, furniture, glass or oil of an unsightly or unsanitary nature, and anything else of an unsightly nature — are prohibited. Such items can attract pests, detract from neighborhood appearance, and pose safety concerns. The City urges residents to keep outdoor areas clean and free of such materials.
These ordinances help protect property values, maintain neighborhood appearance, and promote public health and safety. Our goal is to work collaboratively with residents to support a well-maintained and attractive community.
