Road Salt Shortage
Widespread road salt shortages are impacting communities across Northeast Ohio, including Avon Lake.
The City of Avon Lake has a contract with Cargill, a major provider to dozens of other municipalities and agencies across the region. Our Service Department has been in direct communication with Cargill, and we have been told that road salt is delayed due to back-order issues. We currently have 1,000 tons of road salt on order, but Cargill says we are not likely to receive it until February. This is not an issue specific to Avon Lake, this is impacting every municipality supplied by Cargill.
Our Service Department has been actively exploring alternative sources of road salt and conserving the salt we currently have on hand. Roads will still be plowed, but salt use will be limited and prioritized for main roads, and critical intersections. We will do our very best to keep our roads as clear as possible. Please allow extra travel time, use caution when driving, and avoid parking on streets before, during, and after snowfall so crews can plow effectively. We appreciate your patience and will share any updates as more information becomes available.
