Avon Lake Council approves purchase of former Erieview Elementary School
12/09/2025 – Avon Lake, Ohio – At its December 8, 2025, meeting, Avon Lake City Council approved an ordinance authorizing Mayor Mark Spaetzel to enter into an agreement with Avon Lake City School District (ALCSD) for the purchase of the former Erieview Elementary School building and 9.48-acre property located at 32630 Electric Boulevard. The City plans to repurpose the Erieview facility as a community center for enhanced and expanded recreational programming for all ages, social services, and community meeting spaces. Opened in 1951, Erieview Elementary was closed after the 2024-2025 school year as part of an ALCS plan to consolidate buildings and reduce operating costs.
The total purchase price of the property is $500,000, payable to ALCSD in five annual installments of $100,000. Payments are deferred until July 1, 2027. The purchase of the Erieview facility will be funded through the City’s Recreation Trust Fund – a special fund established to support public recreation – not its General Fund, which funds core services such as police, fire, and public works.
“This purchase is a win-win for our community,” said Mayor Spaetzel. “The Erieview building is a valuable community asset that is well-positioned to support recreational programs year-round, and it is in a great location. At a cost of roughly $53,000 per acre, the purchase price is well below the average price per acre for property in Avon Lake.”
The City plans to make incremental improvements to the facility and will explore leasing part of the building to generate revenue. Recreation programs are expected to be offered at the facility beginning next year.
