Ribbon Cutting at Susan's Sugar and Spice this Friday, November 11, at 2pm

11/07/2022 – On Friday, November 11, at 2:00pm, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at Susan’s Sugar and Spice, the new business at 32824 Walker Rd. in Avon Lake’s Towne Center area.

Susan’s Sugar & Spice is moving to Avon Lake from Midway Mall in Elyria. The bakery is best known for their cakes, pastries and candy. Owner Susan Zeyer bakes over 30 flavors of cake, all of which feature a light, delicious frosting. Susan’s has pastries such as cookies, brownies, and other sweet treats. She will be offering candy as well as some handmade chocolates. She does special event cakes by special order, and is well known for our wedding cakes. Susan’s Sugar & Spice is taking over the space of another bakery, Mimzy’s Bakehouse, and they hope to continue the breads, cinnamon rolls, and pepperoni rolls for which Mimzy's was known.

“I have been baking for as long as I can remember,” says Zeyer. “I learned the techniques of cooking and baking from my mother, Sandra St. Aubyn, but the passion and creativity came from my father, Robert St. Aubyn, who was an amazing baker. In 2013 I started Susan's Sugar & Spice, working primarily out of the Cleveland Culinary Launch Kitchen, until I moved my operation to my home kitchen in North Olmsted. In 2014 my husband Donovan and I began fostering 3 little girls, whom we adopted in 2016. We have since fostered six other children.”

Zeyer’s move to Avon Lake began before she learned that the Mimzy’s space was available. A friend told her to move to Avon Lake because the people would just love her products. She hopes that customers will be pleasantly surprised by the light, moist cakes that she offers, especially her signature flavor, which is a Mandarin Orange Cake with Pineapple Whipped Cream.

The City of Avon Lake cannot wait for Susan to open her doors. “Susan is arriving in Towne Center at a very exciting time, “says Ted Esborn, Avon Lake’s Community Development Director. “We are working more than ever with property owners to plan the future of the City’s central intersection. It is always satisfying to see a new business opening up in one of the Focus Areas that we identified in our 2019 Comprehensive Plan, and based on Susan’s delicious offerings, I think she will be drawing quite a few people into Towne Center.
