Seasonal Employment Packet

Successful candidates are required to complete our Seasonal Employment Packet before they can start their seasonal positions. Completed packets can be dropped off at the Recreation Department located at Avon Lake City Hall, 150 Avon Belden Road. Offices are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

3 on 3 Summer Basketball Program

3 on 3 Summer Basketball - Referee & Scorekeeper

Summer referees and scorekeepers needed Monday through Friday, mornings and early afternoons.

Requirements:

  • Ability to learn how to score basketball games.
  • Run the scoreboard and inform referees of any game changes.
  • Physical requirements - running up and down the court.

3 on 3 Summer Basketball - Supervisor

Supervise the summer 3 on 3 basketball program at Bleser Park, Monday through Friday, mornings and early afternoons.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage game day operations.
  • Ensure all games start on time.
  • Provide equipment to each court.
  • Handle rule interpretation and enforcement when necessary.

Pay rate: Hourly rate starting at $12.00.

Aquatic Center

During the summer, lifeguards, admissions, and maintainence staff are needed at the Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center located at 32850 Electric Blvd. Click the job titles below for more information.

Admission Staff

Admissions staff are the first point of contact for visitors to the pool, and must be courteous, helpful, and knowledgeable about all rules and procedures.

Responsibilities:

    • Handling money transactions, including daily admission transactions and balancing admission sales at the end of the day.
    • Check pool passes and verify residency for daily admission.
    • Responsibilities may include non-lifeguard positions at the big water slide and lazy river.
    • Answer phones and interact with patrons.

Pay rate: Hourly rate starting at $11.75.

Aquatics Supervisor

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Pool Manager, this position supervises and administers all aspects of the operation of the Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center.

General Qualifications:

  • Current certification in CPR, AED, First Aid, LG, and WSI required.
  • LGI, WSIT, Water Park and Water Front Modules, preferred.
  • Two (2) or more years of Aquatics Management experience is necessary.

Pay rate: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Lifeguard

Responsibilities

  • Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations and behaviors.
  • Enforce all rules and regulations of the pool in an effective, fair, and consistent manner.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary facility.
  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergency situations.
  • Represent the City of Avon Lake at all times in a professional manner.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Must be a minimum of 15 years old.
  • Must maintain the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Waterfront, Waterpark & Bloodborne Pathogens certificate. The City of Avon Lake offers certification courses.
Lifeguard Supervisor

Candidates must be available to work 30-40 hours a week, including weekends.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to teach and work with others.
  • Demonstrate the ability to take on additional tasks, such as completing the schedule, running in-services, filling out daily paperwork, and maintaining inventory.
  • Perform job responsibilities with a high level of professionalism.

Pay rate: Hourly rate starting at $16.00.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • 18 years or older preferred.
  • Must maintain the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Waterfront, Waterpark & Bloodborne Pathogens certification. Preferred holder for at least 1 year with working knowledge.
Maintenance Staff

Requirements:

  • Maintain safe and sanitary facilities.
  • Monitor pool water (4) times daily. Water must be tested and meet all standards.
  • Clean bathrooms, pool, pool deck, and other areas.
  • Empty trash daily.
  • Lawn care duties.
  • Complete all required records and reports.
  • Responsibilities may include non-lifeguard positions at big water slide and lazy river.

Concession Staff

Must be available for the majority of the summer, including weekdays and weekends.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow scheduling and adhere to policies concerning shift changes.
  • Cash handling, including running registers and counting cash.
  • Safely handle food.

Qualifications & Skills:

Concession Supervisor

Responsibilities

  • Cash handling.
  • Ability to coach others.
  • Scheduling flexibility (times and locations), available 20-30 hours per week, including weekends.
  • Open and close concession stands.
  • Meet cleaning standards.
  • Food preparation and safety. Online food handling safety class required.
  • Communicate well with coworkers and supervisors.

Greenbox Attendant

The Greenbox Program is a beloved Avon Lake tradition. It is a free summer craft and activity program for children ages 5-12. Greenboxes filled with supplies for hands-on projects are available at City parks, offering a safe, engaging way for children and families to enjoy the parks and express their creativity. 

Greenbox Attendant

This part-time position works with children and parents outdoors. Candidates must be able to follow instructions and assist children with craft activities.

Schedule:

    • Shifts are Tues/Thurs, Weds/Thurs, or Mon/Thurs (mornings/early afternoons/evenings).
    • Greenbox Attendants can expect to work an average of 8-16 hours per week plus prep time, June and July (6 weeks).

Responsibilities:

  • Follow program instructions and assist children in creating crafts.
  • Provide a safe, positive, and engaging environment for participants.
  • Interact professionally with children, parents and staff.
  • Prepare materials for activities and help with clean up as needed.
  • Follow all program policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Work independently with guidance from the Program Supervisor.
  • Provide assistance to children and parents during program activities.

Pay rate: Hourly rate starting at $11.00.

      • Experience working with children preferred, but not required.

Recreation Program Intern

Responsibilities:

  • Availability to work nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Brainstorm, develop and implement innovative, engaging, educational, and enjoyable programs for families and the community.

Parks

Park Attendants are seasonal staff responsible for providing outdoor customer service and park support throughout the city’s parks and recreational areas. This role combines public interaction, park maintenance assistance, and support for city events and summer programs. Park attendants work under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Supervisor and Service Department.

Park Attendant

Schedule:

    • Mid-May/June through August.
    • Average hours vary, up to 40 hours per week; mornings, days, evenings, and weekends, as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

      • Patrol City parks and provide assistance to visitors while enforcing park rules.
      • Enforce park rules and regulations while promoting a positive recreational environment.
      • Assist city staff with visitor and traffic management during park activities and events.
      • Disseminate information about park rules, regulations, and programs to the public.
      • Assist the Service Department with park cleanliness, including litter pickup and cleaning playground equipment when necessary.
      • Support the implementation of summer programs such as Fishing with Friends, Yoga in the Park, Friday Flicks, and other recreational activities.
      • Attend city events to assist with set-up, tear-down, crowd management, and vendor support.
      • May provide guidance to volunteers or seasonal program assistants as assigned.

Pay rate: Hourly rate starting at $12.00.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Previous customer service experience required. 
  • Successfully complete pre-season in-service training. 
  • Valid driver's license required. 
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

Safety Town

Safety Town Teachers are responsible for planning, leading, and implementing program activities that teach children important safety skills in a fun and engaging way. This position works closely with children, parents, and community safety partners to maintain a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment.

Safety Town Teacher

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with children, parents, and City safety partners. Up to 40 hours per week, average hours per week may vary. Must be available to work mornings, afternoons, and evenings, Monday through Friday, June 9 through July 27. Works under the direct supervision of the Program Supervisor. 

Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday, mornings, afternoons, and/or evenings (plus prep time) for two (2) weeks in June.

Responsibilities:

  • Successfully lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.
  • Maintain a safe environment and ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
  • Identify and respond to appropriately to behavior issues, reporting concerns to supervisors as needed.
  • Serve as a positive role model and maintain professional communication with children, parents, staff, and safety partners.
  • Assist with the preparation and clean-up of program materials and classrooms. 
  • Follow all program policies, procedures, and safety guidelines. 
  • Provides guidance and support to assistant staff, as needed.

Pay rate: We offer competitive compensation, including paid prep and planning time, and provide all necessary supplies.

  • B.A. degree in Education or related field, current teacher certification, or equivalent.

Summer Camps

Our Summer Camp program is designed to maximize campers’ time outdoors, offering a variety of activities including games, sports, swimming, field trips, and crafts. We focus on fun, creativity, and hands-on learning, creating a safe and engaging environment for children ages 6–10.

We are looking for enthusiastic, organized, responsible, and outgoing teachers who are confident working with children and eager to make each day memorable.

  • Camps are offered in six (6), 1-week themed sessions with up to 60-80 students per session.
  • Each session includes two field trip days, 1-2 pool days, and lots of walking to our local parks.
  • Teachers typically work 3-6 sessions.
  • Sessions are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with early drop off at 8:00 a.m., and after care until 5:30 p.m.
Summer Camp Counselor

 

Camp Counselors lead summer camp staff responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and high-quality camp experience for all participants. This position is primarily an outdoor role and works closely with children, parents, and activity partners. Camp Counselors plan, organize, and lead daily programming, supervise campers and junior staff, and ensure all camp policies and safety procedures are followed.

Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday, mornings and/or afternoons, June-July, plus required prep time.
  • Average hours vary, up to 40 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities, including, but not limited to:
    • Crafts
    • Nature activities 
    • Songs and games 
    • Swimming 
    • Field trips 
  • Supervise campers during on-site programming and off-site field trips, ensuring proper attendance, transitions, and safety procedures.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to camper behavior issues, implementing behavior management strategies, and reporting concerns, as needed. 
  • Serve as a positive role model and maintain professional communication with campers, parents, staff, and activity partners.
  • Assist with planning schedules, preparing materials, and completing required documentation.
  • Supervise and mentor Junior Counselors and Counselors-in-Training (CITs).
  • Follow all camp policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

Pay Rate: Hourly starting rate is $15.00.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • B.A. degree in Education or a related field, current teacher certification, or equivalent experience preferred. 
  • At least one (1) year of classroom or youth program experience. 
  • Strong leadership, communication, and behavior management skills.

Junior Counselor

Junior Counselors are entry-level, paid summer camp staff who support the daily operations of the Summer Camp program. This position is primarily an outdoor role and works closely with children and parents to create a safe, engaging, and positive camp experience. Junior Counselors assist with on-site programming and off-site field trips under the supervision of Camp Counselors and supervisors while developing leadership, responsibility, and teamwork skills.

Junior Counselors who demonstrate strong performance, leadership, and reliability may be eligible for advancement to Camp Counselor positions in future seasons.

Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday, mornings and/or afternoons, June-July.

Responsibilities:

    • Assist camp counselors with the supervision, safety, and engagement of campers during daily activities and field trips.
    • Help lead and actively participate in camp activities including, but not limited to:
    • Swimming
    • Team-building initiatives
    • Physical games and group activities
    • Supervise and support campers during off-site field trips, including attendance checks, transitions, and safety monitoring.
    • Support daily camp routines, including transitions, set-up, and clean-up.
    • Identify and respond appropriately to camper behavior issues, reporting concerns to supervising staff as needed.
    • Model positive behavior, good sportsmanship, and respectful communication.
    • Interact professionally and courteously with parents, campers, staff, and community partners.
    • Follow all camp policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

Pay rate: Hourly rate staring at $11.75 per hour.

Supervision:

      • Works under the direct supervision of Camp Counselors and Camp Supervisors.
      • Does not serve as the primary supervisor of the camper group.
      • May assist with mentoring Counselors-in-Training (CITs) as needed.

Qualifications & Skills

      • Must be at least 15 years old.
      • Enjoy working with children in a recreational setting.
      • Reliable, responsible, and able to work as part of a team.
      • Current CPR and First Aid Certification required. The City of Avon Lake can assist with obtaining certification.
      • Childcare, camp, or youth program experiences preferred, but not required.
      • Previous camp experience preferred, including participation as a camper in our program.
      • Preference will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in education, childcare, recreation, or a related field.
